Big Ideas & Big
Issues
Speakers cover a variety of big ideas and big
issues as they relate to environment and sustainability, including
systems thinking, paradigm change, worldviews and political
philosophy, human nature, evolutionary psychology, the long-term
future and the prospects for civilization, war, peace and national
security, global population growth, and genetic engineering.
Whole Systems & Systems Thinking. Understanding sustainability
- the need for it and the path to it - is strongly related to
seeing the world in whole systems terms. See Daniel
Dancer, Bob Doppelt,
Gil Friend, Medard
Gabel, William G.
Reed, Dan Chiras,
and Gwen Hallsmith.
Population. The United States has recently passed the
300 million population mark and is headed we're told toward
400 million by mid-century. This will make many of our environmental
and social challenges more difficult to meet. At the same time,
many of the world's poorest countries continue to grow the fastest,
making their task of escaping poverty next to impossible. See
Lester Brown, Paul
Ehrlich, Rob Caughlan,
Pete McCloskey,
and Jim Motavalli.
