Dennis Church

Dennis ChurchAn activist, writer, speaker, and green communications entrepreneur with more than 30 years experience as an agent of social change, Dennis Church is the founder and president of the EcoIQ.com family of sustainability websites. It includes EcoIQ Magazine, EcoSpeakers.com, EcoFootage.com, and several related video and online green media projects.

Over the last decade, the EcoIQ family of websites has served more than 10 million people from more than 100 countries. Its leading service, the EcoSpeakers.com speakers bureau, represents 200 accomplished innovators, authors, and advocates. Collectively, they have written hundreds of books (including many best-sellers), led major government agencies and NGOs, worked for presidents and governors, managed in or consulted for Fortune 500 companies, and pioneered new ideas and concepts on the cutting edge of creating a more sustainable future.

Church has been a pioneer in the field of building sustainable communities. He led in establishing the concept with his study Toward A Sustainable City completed for San Jose in 1980. He conceived and founded Earth Day 1990's major urban initiative, The Global Cities Project. The Global Cities Project enrolled more than 100 U.S. cities – including New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles – as members. In this role, he was the lead co-author of the feature article Building Sustainable Communities published in Nation's Cities Weekly, the newspaper of the National League of Cities. John Hart, author of the book Saving Cities, Saving Money, credits Church with "insights available from no other source." A chapter from Saving Cities, Saving Money describes his role in establishing San Jose's environmental programs.

Church became the founding director of San Jose's Energy Office in 1981, served as a consultant to both the Office of Environmental Management and to the City Council during the 1980's, and was the Manager of the Policy and Planning Division of the Environmental Services Department in 1993 and 1994. Huey Johnson, founder of the Trust for Public Land and former Resources Secretary for the State of California, describes him as “the architect of much of San Jose's environmental program.”

He has worked or consulted for more than two dozen government agencies, senior officials, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions. His assignments have focused on energy conservation and renewable energy production, water conservation, solid and liquid waste recycling, stormwater pollution, pollution prevention, land use and transportation planning, mass transit and other transportation alternatives, urban forestry, open space preservation, and infrastructure protection.

Church speaks about the core concepts of sustainability, the ecological concept of overshoot, the relationship between the environment and the economy, and about how we can chart a path to sustainability, both in terms of technology and in terms of politics and culture.

He explains why successfully dealing with climate change, peak oil, and the many other challenges associated with creating a sustainable future will require everyone’s participation – all political, religious, racial, ethnic, and national segments of the global population must be part of any real solution. His talks describe the concepts, principles and strategies to build the vastly expanded cooperation we will need.

He also offers a half-day workshop on “What We Can Do.” It is a wide-ranging and highly interactive program about actions we can take in our personal lives, as citizens, as employees or businesspeople, as parents, and in all the roles we play, to increase the speed and effectiveness of our transition to a sustainable future.
