He conceived and founded Earth Day 1990's major urban initiative, Church became the founding director of San Jose's Energy Office in 1981, served as a consultant to both the Office of Environmental Management and to the City Council during the 1980's, and was the Manager of the Policy and He has worked or consulted for more than two dozen government agencies, senior officials, non-profit organizations, and educational institutions. His assignments have focused on energy conservation and renewable energy production, water conservation, solid and liquid waste recycling, stormwater pollution, pollution prevention, land use and transportation planning, mass transit and other transportation alternatives, urban forestry, open space preservation, and infrastructure protection. Church speaks about the core concepts of sustainability, the ecological concept of overshoot, the relationship between the environment and the economy, and about how we can chart a path to sustainability, both in terms of technology and in terms of politics and culture. He explains why successfully dealing with climate change, peak oil, and the many other challenges associated with creating a sustainable future will require everyone’s participation – all political, religious, racial, ethnic, and national segments of the global population must be part of any real solution. His talks describe the concepts, principles and strategies to build the vastly expanded cooperation we will need.
