Storm Cunningham

Storm CunninghamStorm Cunningham is the author of two books, The Restoration Economy and ReWealth!, championing natural resource restoration and community revitalization as the global growth industry of the century. He is also the founder of the Toronto-based Revitalization Institute and CEO of the Washington, D.C.-based Resolution Fund. The Revitalization Institute is a global academic network focused on community renewal and nature restoration. Resolution Fund helps put these ideas into practice by preparing communities to create powerful renewal partnerships, and by connecting them with private-sector funding.

In 2002, Cunningham’s book The Restoration Economy proclaimed the arrival of an era in which “restorative development” would be the engine of the world’s growth. It described eight key sectors engaged in the restoration of our natural environment and reconstruction of our built environment. Its sequel, ReWealth!, published in 2008 by McGraw-Hill, laid out a toolkit for economically struggling communities striving to redevelop. According to the American Library Association’s authoritative book review Choice, “Cunningham offers a unique perspective, chronicling the impact of the restoration paradigm on global well-being.”

Cunningham is a featured writer for ReNew Canada, a leading periodical on the practice of community revitalization, infrastructure renewal, and natural resource restoration. From 1996 to 2002, Cunningham was Director for Strategic Initiatives at the Construction Specifications Institute, an association of 18,000 architects, engineers, contractors, and manufacturers which sets standards for quality in commercial construction. He served as CSI's staff liaison to the U.S. Green Building Council.

He has presented at hundreds of venues around the world, including civic, government, industry, and professional groups.  He has lectured at dozens of universities (such as a two-day executive seminar on restorative development at the Harvard University School of Design), including non-US schools ranging from from the University of Guadalajara (Mexico), London South Bank University (UK), and Roskilde University (Denmark). The U.S. State Department sponsored his 2006 speaking tour of Poland.

Cunningham speaks on restorative community development from both the public and private sector point of view.
