Doug McKenzie-Mohr is a pioneer and leader in the rapidly growing field of community-based social marketing. In his fifteen years of consulting and research, he has repeatedly illustrated its utility and effectiveness. His book, Fostering Sustainable Behavior: An Introduction to Community-Based Social Marketing (New Society Publishers), has become an indispensable guide for those who design and deliver programs promoting sustainable practices. As a consultant, he helps a diverse array of clients first identify barriers to behavior change and then develop and evaluate community-based social marketing initiatives to overcome those barriers. He has assisted with projects focusing on waste reduction and recycling, water and energy efficiency, pollution prevention and watershed protection, transportation, climate change, and related sustainability challenges.
Dr. McKenzie-Mohr is a Professor of Psychology at St. Thomas University, Fredericton, Canada. He has served as chair of the American Psychological Association Task Force on Sustainable Development, as coordinator of the international organization Holis - The Society for a Sustainable Future, as a member of Canada's National Round Table on the Environment and the Economy, and as a member of the National Advisory Committee for SustainABILITY. He has been awarded the Canadian Psychological Association's Psychologists for Social Responsibility Research and Social Action Award and the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues Public Advocacy Fellowship.
He delivers half day and full day workshops as well as keynote addresses (sometimes in combination with workshops) for program managers, consultants, and related professionals whose objectives include promoting behavior change. He has delivered programs on community-based social marketing for more than 15,000 professionals in fields including recycling, waste reduction, pollution prevention, energy and water efficiency, transportation, watershed protection, and soil conservation. His workshops cover identifying barriers to behavior change, designing effective programs, using pilots, and techniques for program evaluation. His overall focus is on giving participants confidence in using community-based social marketing in their own work.
