can reduce their environmental impact by conserving more and
polluting less. Included in her talk on "Waste prevention
begins, not ends, with recycling" is a 12-step program
for waste-a-holics. More...

This
topic covers most aspects of recycling, waste reduction, and reuse.
Residential, commercial, industrial, and governmental policies
and programs are included, and most forms of waste (except toxic
and hazardous, mining, agricultural, and logging) are included
as well. Composting, whether at the site the green waste is generated
or elsewhere, is covered here, as are all aspects of processing,
marketing, and using recycled or recovered materials in new products
and services. Buy back, return for deposit, and take back programs
are included. Programs intended to increase the feasibility of
recycling, such as design for recycling (recyclability), are covered
here. Waste-to-energy related to the municipal waste stream is
included. Finally, since "you're not recycling unless you're
buying recycled," all programs for the purchase/procurement
of goods containing recycled content are covered.

Green
Design & Building is related because recycled content
products are frequently included in green construction projects
and because green projects recycle the debris from any demolition
preceding construction as well as the debris from the new construction
itself. Sustainable
Business is related because increased recycling is one
of the most common features of business programs. Renewable
Energy is related because of the use of green waste and
construction and demolition waste as sources of biomass fuel and
because making goods from recycled materials usually requires
much less energy than making those same goods from natural raw
materials. Pollution
& Toxics is related because recycling generally reduces
the amount of pollution produced in manufacturing a good to a
fraction of what is produced when that same good is manufactured
from natural raw materials. Trees
& Living Spaces is connected because landscaping is
both a source of recyclable materials and a use for recycled materials.
And finally, Simple Living
is related because simple living almost always translates into
generating less waste.
